fanlib.com
May. 18th, 2007 08:19 pmon march 16, i got an email from someone named Naomi (
nicestkidintown), inviting me to join the beta site fanlib.com. she gave me a adress and a password. said she'd read my house fanfiction.
i did, i registered, i posted fics, i talked to people, went to the forums, checked some fics.
it was ok, but nothing fantastic, awesome, no great quality fiction or a great atmosphere to talk with other fans.
then the site went public. there were more contests, news of new affiliates. i got some reviews. which i had to look for, since the site won't sent me emails when i get a new one.
they were mostly ok, although one was rather rude and said i had plenty of spelling and punctuation mistakes and i should use a word processor.
now, i may be stupid and ignorant so i don't see what are the glaring mistakes, but even i could see the mistakes in that review.
i'd quote the review, but i can't see it anymore.
this week, i started hearing a lot about the site. evil ways, all about profit, no backing for author. it's all
metafandom is talking about it.
so i ran, basically. i deleted all my fics (hence why i can't show the reviews) and sent an email asking for my account to be deleted.
then i changed my mind and sent another email asking them to ignore it.
i'd rather be registered than have someone use my name. the usual.
looking more closely at the FAQ and TOS, it seemed too vague.
and i don't want to take risks.
if it were a good site, maybe i would, but it's not, so it's not worth it.
in april, they were offering rewards, like t-shirts for those with more than 10 fics, amazon gift certificates for those with more than 30 and ipod nanos for those with more than 50.
two conditions. a) they had to be longer than 500 words. and b) only avaliable to people from the US.
that,honestly,pissed me off.
so i'm out now.
it was just temporarly insanity
ETA:
i just re-read the email. i'd forgotten, but the email was actually from someone from lj
nicestkidintown. she introduces herself(in the email) as "FanLib Beta Launch Coordinator", but in the fanlib site, there's no trace of her. ??
ETA:
i've kept thinking about it.
when i joined, i thought it was just another site, another archive.
and i don't mind posting my stories pretty much everywhere, so i posted them all. i did find rather odd i didn't see a single author i know
i mean, if they invited me, there are way better authors than me, so why weren't they there?
i admit, i didn't look too closely at the FAQ or TOS. i never do, really.
why bother, they usually all say the same.
but then all this stuff started surfacing and it clearly isnt what i expected, or what they said they were and i believe this can't lead to anything good.
it's about money. if it takes off and gets popular, the big companies that produce the shows will want either to stop it or their cut.
i'm afraid it'll bring the most-feared issue to the table: the legality of fanfiction.
and that's simply horrible news.
i'm afraid it's gonna change the way fic is written, read and perceived for ever.
ETA: There's a great summary of the whole thing here
go check it out, tell everyone!!
