So it's been a while since my last entry, which was pretty short.
what have I been up to?

-I spent a day and a half reading the story of Thanfiction which looks poised to win some kind of prize of fandom wackiness. http://twurl.nl/0pdkhj - in case you want to check it out. clear your schedule. get some popcorn.

-I've been catching up on some TV. I'll post some non-spoilery reviews.
Shows I have to catch up: Glee (up to 1x11), Brothers&Sisters (only up to 3x02), Gossip Girl (3x02) ,Criminal Minds (5x02) and CSI:NY (6x05)

*Syfy's Alice: so brilliant. Andrew-Lee Potts was amazing. and adorable. I really liked it and now I ship Alice/Hatter. and I want to rewatch Alice and Primeval. it had good lines, great casting.

*Misfits: I haven't seen much buzz about this show, a shame cause I love it. it's been described as "heroes meets skins" it's about a group of ASBO kids who get caught in a storm and gain superpowers, and how it affects their lives.
It's kinda silly, but it's fun, the characters are engaging and it's very much on the cynical side of the scale which is refreshing for a show about powers. reminds me a bit of No Heroics, actually.
The first season just finished. it has only 6 episodes. it ended really good. I like how it's funny and daring and how you love the characters against your will.

*NCIS: I just finished s3. I saw seasons 1 and 2 but then I kinda lost track. I saw random eps and heard of the characters by fandom mostly. I had s4 but the dvd was corrupted so I had to download again. I knew I'd like Ziva, she's kickass and funny. and the actress is Chilean. it's a fun show and all but it's not the kind of show I'd naturally obsess over, you know? it's not Doctor Who.

*Mercy: While it is a generic hospital show, I quite like it, even though it's predictable. I like the central character,Veronica, and I do find most of the characters interesting or at least bearable. it's a guilty pleasure kind of show.

*HIMYM: I'm sorry, I don't think I'll be watching anymore. I seem to be unable to enjoy now, and if I keep watching I'll just think it's stupid. I honestly hope it improves and doesn't wind up jumping the shark.
I'm bored of random situational comedy.it shouldn't behave as if it is in its firts season, with random adventures and personalities for every character.

*QI:first series I get to watch as it airs!! love this show, it's so funny. and you know, interesting. can't wait for DT's episode.

*NTMB: I've seen a couple of eps of this and I do like it but I don't really follow it.I did see DT's episode, which was really brilliant and hilarious and David was so adorable.  and Catherine was so funny and random. well, everyone was.

*Doctor Who: I have been downloading a lot of Classic!Who. I'll start after Ten's last ep (*sob*) so I have something to look forward to since I'm still not sure if I'll watch series 5.  I haven't gotten around to watching Waters of Mars again. I've begun a rewatch and I just finished s1. I think I'd forgotten how much I love Rose, I've been so caught up with the Doctor leaving. but I do, she's smart, and adorable and caring and nice and such a great character. I do hope she has at least a cameo to say goodbye to Ten. It seems only fair.
I'm still wondering if I should watch Age of Ghost/Doomsday. I skipped it on my last rewatch. Parting of the Ways made me tear up,  so it's clear Rusty still has power over me. speaking of, I want some BadWolf!Rose icons. and I wonder if there's any fic.

I saw this fan-made production, doctor who 2009 an I quite liked it. it's very intriguing. It's pretty well done, lots of references, a good story line, I enjoyed it. it had some technical difficulties but the two main characters were engaging. and it had a billion references. I assume the incarnation it's supposed to be the tenth since it's clearly modeled after him,
I haven't looked at any doctor who spoilers, nor the trailers. I have been watching the advent calendar.
how adorable is David with the proclaimers?

I'm both dreading Christmas and I can't wait til it's here. I figure  I'll run away though. I'll only show up to download but I'll have to wait til I have time to sit down to properly watch the episode without interruptions and with space to breakdown and cry during/after it. must have tissues and chocolate for it as well.

*Harry Potter: I've been rereading as well as reading a lot of fic. I read 'Magical Relations' which is really good and I'm in the middle of  one called 'Hogwarts Houses Divided' which is pretty good, but not awesome. the first one is an AU where in Dudley is a wizard too and it changes a lot of things. the second one is a post-DH fic where the first generation of post-war kids starts hogwarts.
I'm finding rereading the books a bit hard, I feel like I felt when I first had DH in my hands, not wanting to finish the book, not wanting it to end. I'm in the middle of PoA now and I know that if I continue, Sirius and Harry will get to be a family for all of half an hour and I'm dreading it a bit.

I've also been reading AverageWizard a lot. I found MyLifeIsAverage through Tumblr and then FML and TFLM and other similars, though MLIA is my favourite and AW is also brilliant. I don't know how much is actually true but I don't really care.

I still haven't sent out my christmas cards. I'm only sending a handful so I decided to draw them by hand. which makes them look as if a 5-years-old made them.

What else? I've been looking for some oppportunity this summer, I don't really want a part-time job, I mean not one to make money cause I don't feel I'm in such dire need of money, I'd rather have one where I can actually learn something.
I though maybe I oughta approach this place, the,um, company? that organizes the film festival and ask if they need any help. I know some people since I have worked with the festival before and I figure it'd be a good experience.
I'd really like something in my 'field', not as in teaching  but as in translation or something, but that's much harder to come by.

I was also thinking of looking up some summer workshops or something to fill my time.

I also haven't yet decided if I'll move back in with mum or not. I think I might like to. I miss having a backyard and it is a nice neighbourhood. a lot more quiet.  I'll see. mum says it's ok, of course, but I do need to bring my own bed and furniture.

I've gotten into vlogging but haven't uploaded anything yet since my netbook hasn't been cooperating. I'll try again or just do it in the desktop. a mouse is necessary after all and it does  have a bigger screen.

ok, that's it for me. nothing more to tell, I don't think

I absolutely loved this episode. quite possibly the best ever. I only missed Dr.Saunders.
the back story was handled very well, and it was nicely told.
it was a pretty much perfect episode. the writing, the story, the acting, the directing, it was all rather brilliant.
I've seen some other episodes Frakes has directed and he is very talented and I'd love to see him direct Dollhouse again.

spoilers,of course )

Leverage

Sep. 15th, 2009 12:03 am
A couple of weeks ago, Wil Wheaton was on an episode of Leverage.
I'd never seen the show but I like Wil and he guest-stars in good shows so I downloaded his ep to check it out.
and I fell in love.
I proceeded to download the previous episode and OH MY GOD THEY ARE BRILLIANT AND WONDERFUL AND FANTASTIC AND FUNNY AND ADORABLE.
(my twitter lately has been filled with one particular word)
I've already watched them all and I'm heartbroken there's no new ones until january. so I'll just have to watch and rewatch and rewatch. and I read the tv tropes entry and lost a few hours and then came to lj and look up comms for fics and icons. standard new fandom stuff. I've alreadty read a few fics which were very good.

I like that the show while not having a geeky thematic it's definitely geeky. star trek and doctor who reference? star trek guest stars? mark sheppard? definitely aiming at a geeky audience.

I think my favourite character is Parker, though I love them all. I like that she's a classy cat burglar who's been raised by wolves and isn't quite playing with a full deck of cards as they say. she's crazy and awesome and adorable.
Hardison is also fantastic and very geeky and I can't help but ship him and Parker.

I remember hearing about the show cause Christian Kane is in it but it didn't really sound all that interesting and I'm not that big a fan of him.
but it's really good and he's really good in it,too.

Nate and Sophie kind of remind of Jack and Irina. a less violent but equally dysfunctional version. instead of spies, they're thieves.

I've found all character are amazing and I really enjoy that.
Are you a male or female?: the girl in the fireplace
Describe yourself: bad wolf
How do you feel: the long game
Describe where you currently live: new earth
If you could go anywhere where would you go?: the end of the world
Your favorite form of transportation: tooth and claw
Your best friend is: Rose
What’s the weather like: silence in the library
Favorite time of day: the poison sky
If your life was a TV show, it would be called:The Idiot’s lantern
What is life to you: love and monsters
Your fear: Doomsday
What is the best advice you have to give: Partners in crime
Thought for the Day: turn left
How I would like to die: aliens in london
My soul’s present condition: the unicorn and the wasp
My motto: the Doctor dances
I just watched Epitaph One. It was amazing. brilliant. incredible. scary and full of both tearjerkers and heartwarming moments.
Joss really should make horror or post-apocalyptic movies. well, I'm waiting for cabin in the woods.
spoilers for Epitaph One and Echoes )
I just came back from seeing Harry Potter and the Half-blood prince.
It was pretty good. I really liked it and want to see it again.
but the ending dissapointed me.

discussion, I suppose these could be called spoilers )
Because I am probably crazy, I decided to take a look into the torchwood fandom.
and, I must say, there are some fucked up people there.

I know they are hurt and upset. I know because Doomsday ripped my heart into shreds and I imagine they feel something similar.
and I understand them in their comm wishing for reset button, wishing that it was all a dream, hell, even saying that RTD's running away. crossing the line a bit, but ok, it's their comm.

What I don't understand at all is the people on twitter abusing @jamesmoran, posting spoilers and saying things like "I HATE RUSSELL T DAVIES"

thing is, It's ok being upset, and being a crazy fan. well, it's not ok, but I mean, there are worse things. I just don't understand why they must do it publicly.

bad things always happen.
and one thing I believe is, don't attack the writers.
don't let them see how crazy you are, how crazy we all are.
fandom is supposed to be fun. and it is supposed to be about fans connecting with one another.
and most of the time someone from TPTB gets involved, things don't end well.
being involved in fandom means at some point you may, nay, will get your heartbroken.
it doesn't mean you get to blame TPTB. you decided to get involved, you should've known what could happen.

writers get abused, actors are stalked and end up getting boxes of sex toys, their significants others treated like crap, and what for? cause someone got their feelings hurt? if you can't deal with it, get the fuck out of fandom.

grow up.

Yes, it's your favorite show/movie/book/band/game/etc
it does not entitle you to anything

I'm a Doctor/Rose shipper. Sadly, this side has had a few batshit fans.
people bashing Martha or Donna, and worse, people bashing Sophia or Georgia or Lawrence.
and as a result, the whole of D/R fans were/are seen as crazy.
I don't have anything against RPF, but the moment you start losing sight of the difference between fiction and real life, you have a problem and you need to step back.
The Doctor and Rose are one couple, David and Billie a completely different one.
and yeah, I like (and ship) both of them. but you have to set boundaries.

like no bashing of SO's.
no bashing of the writers of the show.
especially not in their blogs or twitters cause all it achieves is making us all look crazier, and worse, dangerous and scary and then no one will want to come near us.

write a billion fix-it fics. plot revenge if you want. but at least do it in your blog or journal and hopefully under friends-lock.

learn to keep a distance is all I'm saying. learn to deal with unpleasant events in a more mature way than shouting at whoever's near.

I love fandom, but stuff like this scare me and also scare that our toys are gonna be taken away.

Update [18:38]:

TORCHWOOD

Jul. 10th, 2009 08:40 pm
At the beginning of the week, I wasn't even sure if I was gonna watch Torchwood, but when I got home I got an email from the box saying the torrent was up so I decided to give it a chance.

and the episode was good enough to keep me watching all week.

torchwood:children of the earth )
and with the announcement of the new companion, all my fears about Moffat's era have quickly comeback.

not really spoilers but cutting just in case )

Does Doctor Who count? admittedly, it doesn't actually spends all that much time in space, more like in alien planets or Earth's future or past but it's still a scifi show, the TARDIS is a space-and-time ship.
and it is currently my favourite tv show.
-
Firefly/Serenity
followed very closely by Battlestar Galactica
which is also followed by Star Trek:TOS which is almost tied with Star Wars

I also like Farscape but I've only seen the first two seasons so I can't really count it.

Oh, that's easy.
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.
I love this book, it's hilarious and adorable and it has a a little something for everyone. it has romance and action and horror and the end of the world and children's adventures and all in a wonderful language that makes you laugh and cry and you never want to finish the book.

Loved the new primeval. made me cry in some bits.

It made me realise I'm rather low on shows to watch and obsess over.
That are still still airing and not on hiatus or have ended

TSCC has just ended (its season hopefully)
BSG ended,so has Pushing Daisies (well, technically there is a couple episodes left)
Doctor Who is on hiatus. so is Torchwood.

Basically,I'm watching Dollhouse,Castle and Primeval.
Well, there is also HIMYM and TBBT.
but these too seem on the verge on ending. same with Bones.
House is also nearly over and it's not as good as it once once.
Life is over (hopefully also for the season)

Caprica hasn't even started yet.

I'm not that into Criminal Minds, Fringe, Grey's Anatomy or Private Practice - I haven't caught up on those,I'm several eps behind but they're not so important.

I like Kings but it's not that great and it's been cancelled too.

CSI is fun but mostly on Lower Deck episodes, like the latest one with Wendy and Hodges and AstroQuest.

I tried watching Robin Hood 301 and it kinda bored me a bit, so I'll wait before continuing.

CSI NY I like but it's also nearly over.

And while I do have a billion shows to watch, it's fun when a show it's airing to see what other people think, read their posts an tweets and all the discussion.

What else is on? 30 rock, though I don't love it as much. My boys, which is fun and all but not worth obsessing over.
Better off ted is also pretty fun, though I'm not exactly head over heels for it.
It's been a while since I've watched Chuck and I  was never a big fan to begin with

Burn Notice doesn't come back for a while

Dexter is another show I haven't caught up on.maybe I should.

Greek's been pretty fun but not OMGAWESOME

There's a lot of things on TV,sure, but so few are are BRILLIANT. that make me go crazy obsessive and writing fic and meta and making vids or whatever.

Most seemto be of the kinds one watches, comment about a few things and then forget about.
and that's kinda boring.
I like shows that I can obsess over.
I know neither Castle nor Dollhouse or Primeval are perfect.
I'm not looking for perfection. Just something that excites me, with characters I care about so I can ignore any plotholes or look for alternative explanations.
I like shows that frak with my head and my heart.

Next on my to-watch list:
-Star Trek TOS season 3
-Dexter season 3
-Skins
-Band of Brothers
-Teachers s3 (must download first)

Now, about TV I've watched lately: Spoilers for Bones,Primeval, Pushing Daisies and Castle )

"In the clearing beyond the castle, the twelve months sit about a fire, warming their feet, exchanging tales. They may do favours for you, if you are polite. you may pick strawberries in December's frost."

From Neil Gaiman's "Instructions" which happens to be one of my favourite poems ever.

I also thought of "I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings" from John Gillespie Magee's "High Flight"
